2 Elul

Below is an excerpt from Saki Santorelli's magnificent book, Heal Thy Self: Lessons on Mindfulness in Medicine. I find it so compelling and appropriate for this time of year I thought I would use the text for contemplation through Shabbat (the entire excerpt is below today's message):

I just spoke to Ezra on the phone. He is walking around the Golan Heights with a couple from BJBE about to take a jeep ride. The Golan is packed with Israeli vacationers.  In fact, many of you are just about to grab the last moments of summer for time away, time with family, time to organize your homes, time to move to a different home, time to enjoy the summer air. Time is what we have. It is precious. We should pay careful attention with how we use the time we have. To think, to accomplish, to give, to aspire, to rest, to run, to care, to love.

Israel, awareness and our job as American Jews

Most of you have heard the news from Israel. For those of you who have sent me emails asking about our family - thank you. All is well. Talia and Moti and the girls were home in the northern part of Israel, Shiri had just left work in Tel Aviv and though Ilan was at that bus stop an hour before the explosion, he is safe at his base. Nevertheless, today’s attack is personal because we all have a stake in Israel and her welfare.
