2015 MLK Day Of Community Service for BJBE

Deerfield plans events for Martin Luther King day of service

Ideas to develop a day of community service around the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday in Deerfield have been percolating for more than a year and are coming to fruition.

Both the village and Congregation B’nai Jehoshua Beth Elohim (BJBE) will be offering local residents an opportunity to help others both far and near Jan. 19 at different locations in Deerfield and beyond.

BJBE will be holding its second annual MLK Community Day of Service at 12:45 p.m. Jan. 19 at the synagogue, 1201 Lake Cook Road, along with other locations while Deerfield will host Give Where You Live from 12:30 to 4 p.m. that day at Village Hall.

People heading to Give Where You Live will have the opportunity to write notes to members of the United States Armed Forces and possibly another project as well as drop off food which will go to the West Deerfield Township Food Pantry, according to Mayor Harriet Rosenthal.

At the BJBE Day of Service, people can stay at the synagogue to cook meals for the dispossessed or make mats for the homeless shelter operated at Deerfield’s First Presbyterian Church, according to BJBE Youth and Family Engagement Director Kelly Goldberg. People also have the option to head to one of the other locations to provide assistance.
